10-03-1955 Regular MeetingThe regular meeting of the Mayor and Council was held October 3, 1955 at the City Hall at 7;45 P.M. Mayor'James E. Quarles presiding with the following councilmen present: N.E. Brenner, John S. Collier, Jean E. Johnson and A. M. Poston. Motion N. E. Brenner seconded A. M. Poston to adopt minutes as dorrected. Voted unanimous. H. C. Sanders of Elizabeth Street presented petition requesting said street to be paved. J. D. Daniell presented petitions requesting that Bank Street from Atlanta to Guthrie Street be improved by construction of sidewalk, curb and gutter. Harold Davis of the Volunteer Fire Department thanked everybody for their cooperation in erecting the b.uilding to house the Rescue Unit. Petition presented requesting crossing signal at Hawthorne Street. Motion N. E. Brenner, seconded A. M. Poston that this Council go on record as requesting crossing light at Hawthorne Street. Voted unanimous. Petition and letter of A. C. Shepherd requesting that hearing be set for narrow sidewalk on Atlanta Street referred to Street Committee to give report soon as possible. Mayor Quarles retired: Mayor Pro-tem Brenner took chair: J. D. Daniel thanked Police Department for their work and cooperation in the recent robbery of his store. Motion John S. Collier seconded Jean E. Johnson that Mr. Farnest Jones as chairman of the 'fax Assessors Board be paid $15.45 auto expense, and $4.00 bus fare to tax short school in Athens. Voted unanimous. Mayor Quarles returned. Motion John S. Collier seconded A. M. Poston that we purchase one bed unit for Fire Department at a cost of $50.00 and other 3 units needed to be taken up at a late, meeting when more money was available. Voting for: Collier, Brenner, and Poston. Abstaining: Johnson. Motion John S. Collier seconded N. E. Brenner that City Engineer Grist be authorized to purchase paint and paint outside of Fire and Police Building. Repair the roof and inside of jail with adequate heat to be installed. Voted unanimous. Letter from Kennesaw Land Company on the z.oning status of the property located at Kennesaw Drive and South Cobb Drive discussed with recom- mendation that the matter be checked out with City Attorney. City Engineer Grist recommended a pay raise for G. L. Hood,Superintendent of Streets. Motion Jean E. Johnson seconded A. M. Poston that G. L. Hood salary be raised to $75.00 per week as recommended by T. L. Grist, effective next pay period. Voted unanimous. Motion John S. Collier seconded A. M. Poston that we purchase the Olivetti Printing Calculator at a cost of 1,�?485.00. Voted unanimous. Motion N. E. Drenner seconded Jean E. Johnson that the property owned by E. C. Eaton designatOd on plat submitted adjoining existing city limits, City of Smyrna be on application of P.C. Faton accepted in City of Smyrna. Copy of Ordinance and said plat attached to these minutes and made a part thereof. Voted unanimous. Motion N. F. Frenner seconded Jean F. Johnson that Cliffwood Subdivision 245 r designated on plat submitted adjoining existing City Limits, City of Smyrna be on application of Cliffwood Subdivision accepted in City of Smyrna. Copy of Ordinance and said plat attached to these minutes and made a part thereof. Voted unanimous. G. Robert Derick - Land Planning Consultant discussed his ability to furnish the city with desired type map to be used to develop the parks. Earnest Johe.s r`epbrted •that the total tax digest for 1955 would be $6,378,692.00. Motion N. F. Brenner seconded John S. Collier that Mr. Jones tax report be accepted. Voted unanimous. An Ordinance was introduced by A.M. Poston seconded N. E. Prenner `_', providing,that Elizabeth Street from Spring Street to dead end be improved by paving. Copy of said ordinance attached to these minutes and made a part thereof. Nfotion for adoption of Section 6 and 7 of Ordinance for paving of Elizabeth, Street by A. M. Poston seconded by N. F. Brenner, Voted unanimous. An Ordinance was introduced by'A. M. Poston seconded by N. E. Brenner providing that Bank Street from Atlanta Street to Guthrie Street be improved by curbing and gutter. Copy of said Ordinance attached to these minutes and made a. part thereof. - Motion for adoption of Section 6 and 7 of Ordinance for curbing and gutter of Bank Street by A. M. •Poston seconded by N. E. Brenner., Voted unanimous. An Ordinance was introduced by A. M. Poston seconded by N. F. Brenner providing that' Bank Street from Atlanta Street to Guthrie Street be improved by paving dewalks. Copy of said ordinance attached to these minutes and ma-ae -a part thereof. Motion 'for adoption of Section 6 and 7 of Ordinance for paving sidewalks of Bank Street by A. M. Poston seconded by N. 7. Frenner. .
