The regular meeting of Mayor and Council was held August 6, 1956, at 8 P. m.
at the City Hall. Mayor James E. Quarles presiding with the following
Councilmen present: N. E. Brenner, A. V. Bolton, J. F. Johnson, D. M.
Scarborough, Murray Sonenberg, J. G. White and R. H. Wood.
Motion J. E. Johnson, seconded Murray Sonenberg to adopt minutes -as read.
Zoning hearing on the G. F. Brown property located on the northwest corner
of Love and S. Atlanta Street opened. Mr. G. C. Greer presented petition
signed by property owhers in the immediate.vicinity protesting rezoning
with said property owners present.
Councilman Brenner arrived.
Mr. J. Y. Wooten and G. F. Brown spoke for said rezoning.
Motion Murray Sonenberg, seconded by,N. F. Brenner that the property of
G. F. Brown located at the intersection df Love and South A tlanta Street
be denied zoning for business. Voted unanimous.
Hearing opened on the resurfacing with.curb and gutter on McLinden Avenue
from Concord Road to Dunton Street opened.
Motion Murray Sonenberg,seconded D. M. Scarborough that the ordinance to
resurface, curb and gutter on McLinden Avenue be changed to read from
Concord Road to Evelyn Street instead of Dunton Street. Voted.unanimous.
Motion D. M. Scarborough, seconded J. G,0 White - that' -the ordinance. to re -
surf ace, curb and gutter McLinden Avenue from Concord Road to Evelyn Street'
be adopted. Voted unanimous.
Motion J. F. Johnson, seconded.D. M. Scarborough that Mr. Hendrix of 581
McLinden Avenue be given relief to the extent of non-payment of 50 feet
of resurfacing, curb and guttering, as.hi-s property fronts on• a corner lot.
Voted unanimous.
Hearing opened on the paving of Fuller Street.
Motion D. M. Scarborough, seconded R.-H. Wood that the Street Committee
recommend that Fuller Street be paved except the turn around in front of
Jefferies. Voting for: Scarborough•, Johnson,White and Wood. Voting
against: Sonenberg, and Brenner, also Bolton.
Letter from H. Buckner and Mr. Givins read, implying that the Sanitary
Committee make survey, with Peck and Presley to check operation of City
Plant and investigate the possibility of another plant polluting stream.
Written report to be turned in to Committee by the City Engineer.
Councilman.Johnson called -attention to the ordinance now on books prohib-
iting the parking of trailors within the City limits. Referred by Mayor
Quarles to:Planning and Zoning Committee to make recommendation to Council
after getting over-all picture from adjoining cities.
Motion J. E. Johnson, seconded D. M. Scarborough that the City employ an
additional full-time policeman.
Finance statement presented by Councilman Sonenberg.
Voting for hiring policeman: Bolton, Johnson, Scarborough, Sonenberg,
White and Wood. Voting against: Brenner.
Motion D. M. Scarborough, seconded Sonenberg that Magbee Drive be improved
by the construction of curb and gutter at a cost not to exceed $1.25 per
.front footage. Voted Unanimous.
Motion D. M. Scarborough, seconded Murray Sonenberg that -the contract be-
tween C. W. Matthews and R. B. Bennett Realty Company be approved for pav-
ing streets in Bennett Subdivision, across Sbu.th Cobb Drive as per request.

as read by D. M. Scarborough be adopted. Copy of said paving ordinance
attached to these minutes and made a part thereof. Voted unanimous.
Motibn D. M. Scarborough, seconded Murray Sonenberg that the motion re-
lating to the improving with curb and gutter on Magbee Drive, be withdr wn
as no provisions were made in said ordinance to resurface or pave stree�

Councilman R. H. Wood reported that.the Tax Committee had held three (3)
meetings.
Motion R. H. Wood, seconded J. G. White that Harold Goldsworthy be hired
as Tax Advisory for six (6) months at Seventy-five ($75.00) Dollars
per month. Voted unanimous.
T!ation R. H. Wood, seconded J. G. White that the City hire a student'
draftsman to draw tax maps for the City of Smyrna. Voted unanimous. .
A discussion was led by Attorney Harold S. Willingham on proposed elevatio
of water tank.
Motion A. V. Bolton, seconded N. E. Brenner that the new sight, located
on City's Church Street Park, be submitted to Merritt and Welker Engineers.

Motion A. V. to3ton, seconded D. M. 'Scarborongh that the City:.give Mr.
L. B. Rozelle free of charge, a.business license to operate a beer
Package store on Concord Road, so tax can be called on beer sold. Voted
unanimous.
Motion A. V. Bolton, seconded Murray Sonenberg that it shall be illegal
to dump trash,or garbage on municipal property within the City limits of
Smyrna, or on private property. Violators will be subject to a fine not
less than Twenty-five Dollars ($25.00) or not more than One Hundred Dollars
($100.00). A standard reward of $25.00 to be paid for information
leading to the arrest and conviction of persons or persons guilty of
violating said ordinance. Voted unanimous.

($1000.) be paid for 26 borings on Northcutt propprty for. outfall line
subject to signing contract to be paid from construction fund.
Voted unanimous.
Motion A . V. Bolton, seconded D..M. Scarborough that Mr. Kenneth Presley
be given a Fifty Dollar ($50.00) per month increase in salary. effect-
ive August 1., 1956. Voted Unanirgous.

Mayor Quarles appointed the followingiStrructurial Committee for all City
employees make recommendations back by October meeting. Sonerberg,
Bolton and Johnson. ,
Motion D. M. Scarborough, seconded Murray Sonenberg that the expenditure
of Six Hundred Dollars ($600.00) be approved for work'on Powder Springs
Street so curb and gutter could be put down. Voted unanimous.
