r The continuation of the regular meeting of the Mayor and Council
was held January 170 1956 at 8:00 P.M. at the City Hall, Mayor,
James E. Quarles presiding with the following Councilmen present:
N.E. Brenner, A.V. Bolton, D.M. Scarbrough, Murray Sonenbergq J.E.
Johnson, and R. H. Wood.
Mayor Quarles -called meeting to' order.
H.F. Brown, R.D. Patterson, M.C. Tanner, J.B. Bates, R.L. Robinson
were sworn in as Policemen of City -of -Smyrna -by Mayor Quarles.
Fire Chief Bond ask for one more man for the Fire Dept.
A study with recommendation as 'follows was made of the salaries for
the budget:
Motion by Murray Sonenberg, seconded by J.E. Johnson that the salary
be set as Follows:
Mayor $75.00 per Month
Mayor Pro-tem $65.00 per Month
Councilmen $50.00•per Month
r' Voted unanimous.
Motion by J.P;. Johnonv seconded by Murray Sonenberg that the Recorders
salary be set at $65.00 per Month. Voted unanimous.
Motion by J.F. Johnson, seconded by Murray Sonenberg that the Clerk
salary be raised to $310.00 per Month. Voted unanimous.
Motion by N.F. Brenner, seconded by Murray Sonenber that the Chief of
Police Salary be raised from $320.00 per month to 1330.00. Voted unanimous.
Motion by A.V. Bolton, seconded by R.A. Wood that all salaries be retroactiv
to Jan. 1, 1956. Voted' unanimous.
` Motion by Murray Sonenberg; seconded by D.M. Scarbrough that the two
Police Sergents pay be adopted as scheduled. Voted unanimous.
Motion by R.H. Wood, seconded by Murray' Sonenberg that the four Police-
m' to salary be adopted as scheduled. Voted unanimous.
Motion by Murray Sonenberg, seconded by R.H. Wood that the Fire Chief's
salary be raised to $310.00 per Month. Voted unanimous.
Motion by R.H. Wood, seconded by A.V. Bolton that the firemen's salary
be adopted as follows:
Porterfield and Groce - $250,00 per Month
Atkinson 230.00 per Month
1 New Man 220.00 Per Month
Voting for: Brenner, Bolton, Wood, Sonenberg, and Scarborough.
Johnson abstaining.
Motion by J.E. Johnson, seconded D.M. Scarbrough that the Mayor's
recommendation be accepted on the 11 volunteer men-. Voted.unanimous.
r Motion by Murray.Sonenberg Seconded by J.F. Johnson that the Mayor's
recommendation be accepted on the 6 apprentice firemen and set as
scheduled. Voted unanimous.
Montion by J.F. Johnson, seconded by MurneAy,.,5•onenberg +.that�.••the Attorney's
salary be set as recommended. Voted unanimous.
Motion by Murray "Sonenberg, seconded by D.M. Scarborough that one
sanitary Dept. truck Driver be paid $1.10 per Hr. and the other driver
Elmer Wester be raised to $1.20 per Hr. in view of Mr. Divists

Sanitary land firld operator pay rate be set at 1.20 per Hr.

Mayor pro -tern Brenner took Chair.
Motion by R.H. Wood, seconded by J.F. Johnson that Mr.^ Pecks s
salary be set at 235,00 per Nuath, beginning Feb. 11, Voted
unanimous.
Motion by D.M. Scarborou h, seconded by J.E. Johnson.. that Mr.
flood ts salary bOet at 75.00 per Wk.
Mayor Quarles returned.
Motion by D.M. Scarbrough, seconded by N.E. Brenner that Mr.
DeBoard's pay rate be set at 1.10 per Hr. noted unanimous.
Motion by D.M. Scarbrough, seconded by J.E Johnson that Street
Dept* labor be set at 1.00 per Hr. Voted unanimous.)
Motion by J.E. Hohnson, seconed by D.M. Scarbrough that the
salary for other clerical help be set at $40.00.per Wk. Voted
unanimous.
Motion by N.F. Brenner, seconded by D.M. Scarborough that Mrs.
Melvin, assistant City Clerk be raised to.$225.00 per Month,
effective 1st Jan. 1956. Voted unanimous.
Mayor Quarles recommended that Mr. Presley salary•sIbay the same
for the' present time from Water Extension Fund, I
Motion by N.7. Brenner, seconded by D.M. Scarborough that Mr.
Kenneth.Presleyts salary be raised to $350.00 per Month and
to be paid from Water Extension Fund. Voting for: Brenner,
Scarborough, Wood, Johnson, and Bolton. ` Sonenberg" abstaining.
Motion, N.F. Brenner, seconded by J.E. Johnson that Mr. Holmes
and Mr. DavidIs salary stay as in. Voted unanimous.
_ Motion by N.E. Brenner, seconded by D.M. Scarbrough that the
balance of the Construction crews s pay rate stay the same.
Voted unanimous.
Motion by N.E. Brenner, seconded by J.E. Johnson that the
property of A.M. Poston designated on plat submitted adjoining
existing City limits City of Smyrna be on application of
A.M. Poston accepted in City of Smyrna. Copy of°ordinance and
said plat attached to these minutes and made a part thereof.
Voted unanimous.
Motion by Murray Sonenberg seconded by N.E. Brenner that all
Ordinances for subdivisions or per house annexation to City
of Smyrna be referred to Planning and Zoning Committee for
appr operate recomendation do Council. Voted unanimous.
Motion by J.E. Johnson, seconded by N.E. Brenner to Continue
meeting Jan, 23rd Monday 8:00 P.M.

The continuation of the regular melting of the Mayor and Council

James E.Quarles presiding with the following councilman present:
N.E. Brenner, A.V. Bolton, J.S.Collierr J.E.Johnson, D.M. Scarbrough,
Murray,Sonenberg and R.H. Wood
Minutes of previous meetings held in Januarys read -as a matter of
information. d
Mr. Fred Matthews mequested rezoning of his property located
351 North Atlanta St. Corner of Fleming St,
Motion N.E. Brenner seconed J.E.hJohnson that the hearing for
rezoning the Fred Matthews property be set for February 8 pm
voted unaminous.
Mrs. R. L. Gorden 581 Gober Terrace requested permission to park
trailer on lot adjoining her property her
hem-husa Referred to Planning and Zoning
Committee to make recommendation to council on February 6.
Mayon Quarles recommended that the Planning and Zoning Committee
at their meeting to give thought to a new trailer ordinance.
Discussion held on budget. Motion Murrgy Sonenberg seconed J.S. Collier
that the budget be adopted as discussed and set forth. Copy attached
to these minutes and made a part thereof. Voted unaminous.
Letter read by Mayor Quarles from the Engineer Presley on
purchasing oil and grease supplies..
Councilman Sonenberg recommended that some type of periodical
inspection be --made to help keep the equipment in better
condition.
Letter read from Engineer Presley requesting and recommending that
Howard Robinson by hired to take J. Wilson McEntyre place as he
had returned to school. Motion J.E. Johnson secondd D.M. Scarbrough
that we hire Robinson to take McEntyre place. Voted Unanimous.
The need of a calculating machine for the engineer office referred
to Finance Committee to make recommendations to council at next
meeting.
Mayor Quarles appointed J.S. Collier to serve on the Library Board
for the coming year.
Mayor reported that council didn't have the authority to deleigate
chief of police to erect stop signs, paint yellow curves and so
forth . Chief Epps requested to -present list so action could be
taken by countil.
A.V. Bolton Chairman of License Committee explained the Business
Licence Ordinance as presented.
