The regular meeting of the Mayor and Council was held at the City Hall
May 40 1953 at 7:45 P.M. Mayor G.N. Duncan, presiding at the meeting
with the following Councilmen present, G.R. Yarbrough, C.M. Hamby,
Harry Mitchell, Jr. and Sohn Collier. City Attorney, Harold Willingham
and City Electrical Inspector J.M. Atha present.
Minutes of regular meeting of April read and approved as read.
Attending the meeting were, representatives of Lockheed Heights Sub -
Division. Board of Directors, H.F. Carter VicePresident and R.J.
Pittman Secretary.
Motion by C.M. Hamby, Seconded by Harry Mitchell to waver the fees for
water and sewer taps for Community Center Building to be erected on
the South side of Cheokee Rd next to branch. Voting Unanimous,
Councilman Glen Yarbrough stated he though BuAding Inspector Taylor
would go along also on wavering his fee for inspection.
Paul 11hite of Dell avenue came before council in referance to curb
and gutter on Dall.
The Mayor stated that Council would pass ordance establishing a build-
ing
line on West Spring St. May 18, 1953,. ` rb�
Motion by Councilman Harry Mitchell, Seconded by C.M. Hamby for Council to
pay .60 a week for the Firemans Insurance and if fireman wanted his
dependents covered he would have to pay for the additional coverage.
Vote unanimous
Finance report read by Chairman of Finance Committee,_ C.1!. Hamby
Motion by Councilman C.P.Q. Hamby, Seconded by G.H. Yarbrough that the
Smyrna Chamber of Commerce by�called on to pay their own gas and light
bills. Vote unanimous.
Motion by Councilman C.M. Hamby, Seconded by,G.R. Yarbrough for the
City Engineer to draw us cost estimate on installing sewerage on the
older streets of Smyrna that does not have sewerage. Vote Unanimous
Street and -Planning and Zoning Committee to get bids on concrete and
granite curb and gutter far Dell Ave. if installed. to be paid for by
the property owners.
J Councilmen John Collier stated that he has been to see Commissioner
Heck and that he promised to pave immediately the streets in Smyrna that
had been passed up for paving. Streets included Stephens, Smith on Reed,
Anderson Circle, Hickory Hill, Marston.
Councilman Harry Mitchell stated that 2 new nets had been purchased for
the tennis court.@ $ 25.00 each. Roller for $18,00 and a liner.
Motion by C.M. Hamby; seconded by John Collier to charge $,10.00 to out-
siders for use of ball park. vote Unanimous
Motion by Harry Mitchell, Seconded by John Collier that the curb be
moved back 31ft.-fo edge of side walk on South Atlanta St. from Smyrna.
Drug Store to cemetary fence. To be painted for angle parking- and
no parking be allowed on East side of Atlanta St. Vote Unanimous.
Mayor Duncan requested the clerk call all coundil menbers on Friday
instead of Monday reminding them of Council meeting.
Attorney Willingham stated that the bill would be drawn up for the
next -Legislature for Recorder clerk. Mayor or MayorPro Tem. to preside
at Traffic Court.
Motion by C.M. Hamby, Seconded by Harry Mitchell to pay Claude Hicks
for drawing up the legal discription of City Limits extensions.
Attorney Willingham stated that the bond issur voted on and passed
April 15, 1953 was validated may 4, and the county would get the
money in June. -This being a 3 year plan would have 3 years to complete
the work.
Mayor Duncan appointed C.M. Hamby to serve on Library Board.'

The clerk was requested to write letter thanking Mr. John Heck for
the help given on parking lot.
Requested that Geo. Johnson of Walker St. be brought to Council meeting
in reference t o. junk Auto -in yaed.

Motion by C.M. Hamby,•Seconded by G.R-. Yarbrough to close City Hall
Saturday Noon for the months of May, June, July, and August. Vote
Unanimous.
Motion by John Collier, Seconded by Harry Mitchel]. that no one be
authorized to let the folding chairs leave City Hall.
Any orginazation was welcomed to use Council Chambers at any time if
meeting does not conflict with City business. ;
The clerk was abk to write letter to B.L. Walker asking that no
more heavy equipment be parked on N. Atlanta St. Parking Lot.
Mayot Duncan read a letter fromthe Geo. Munical Association attached
to minutes and madea parthereof. .
The business license of Mr. Barress in The Marietta Laundy Building
referred to license Committee.
Harry Mitchell to contact Mr. Crump, Principal of Smyrna Grammar
School about the playground equipment now in the Cities possession.
Recommended that the combination of the safe be changed.
Motion by G.R. Yarbrough, Seconded, C.M'. Hamby that the water and
Sewerage Committee be authorized to buy bookeeping machine from Mr.
Gold for $1,000.00. Payments to be made each month with�46 little
down as possible. Vote Unanimous.
Motion by C.M. Hamby, Seconded by G.R. Yarbrough to purchase Sewer
cleaning rod for $350.00
Motion by Harry Mitchell, Seconded by•John Collier for Police Force
to be invited to attend Council Meeting 2-4eeksI ffrom tonight, May
18, 1953.,
