08-01-1947 Regular Meeting32 August 1, 1947 A meeting of the Mayor and Council was held at the City Hall on August 1, 1947, at 7:30 P.M. The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, Mrs. Lorena P. Pruitt with all councilmen present: B. H. Hanson, H. D. Durham, E. E. Jackson, H. P. McCollum and W. A. Quarles. Motion was made by Mr. Quarles, seconded by Mr. Durham that Tax Assessors be paid $75.00 each. Motion was unanimously carried. Motion was made by Mr. Quarles, seconded by Mr. Hanson that tax levy for 1947 be tentatively fixed at 10 mills: three (3) mills for deposit*to the Sinking Fund in the Bank of Smyrna for retirement of old water and sewer bonds; and seven (7) mills for the General Fund; this tentative levy to be valid only if total tax valuation remains primarily the same as on report submitted by Tax Assessors on July 14. Motion was unanimously carried. Motion was made by Mr. Quarles, seconded by Mr. Durham not to refund $5.00 paid by Fred Matthews for permit for temporary building; however, the permit will'still be good whenever Mr. Matthews decides to build in the future.. 'Motion was unanimously carried. Motion was made by Mr. Quarles, seconded by Mr. McCollum, that an ordinance controlling the erection of signs, attached hereto, be passed. Motion was unanimously carried. Motion was made by Mr. Quarles, seconded by Mr. Hanson, to pay all bills outstanding against General Fund Account,.Construction Fund Account and Waterworks and Sewerage Revenue Fund'Account. Motion was unanimously carried. Motion was made by y Mr. Durham, seconded by Mr. Jackson, to pay Mr. Paul Hensley $20.00 for survey to establish city limit lines. Motion was unanimously carried. Myers,' -Clerk M ORDINANCE TO C ONTROL ERECTION OF SIGNS No sign at point of purchase locations shall extend out over sidewalks further than twelve (12) inches from curb or street. No sign shall be erected so as to be closer than nine (9) feet from bottom of sign to sidewalk. Pipes or poles will not be allowed on sidewalks or on arty city property. They must, if used, be installed on owners property. All electric signs shall bear underwriter's label of approval. A permit shall be obtained from City Clerk before erecting signs of any type within city limits. Signs of all types shall be so erected, lettered and manufactured as to be a credit to the appearance of the business section of the city and shall be in good taste. Electrical signs shall be inspected by City Electrical Inspector and a fee of $1.50 shall be charged for permit to take care of inspection. PENALTY FOR VIOLATION: Any person, persons, firm or corporation who shall violate this ordinance, shall be fined not more than $25..00 for each offense, or confined to the callaboose, or work ! upon the streets of the City of Smyrna, not exceeding ten (10) days.
