July 7, 1947
The regular meeting of the Mayor and Council was held at the
City Hall on June 10, 1947, at 7:30 P.M.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, Mrs. Lorena P.
Pruitt, with all councilmen present: B. H. Hanson, H. D.
Durham, E. E. Jackson, H. P. McCollum and W. A. Quarles.
Minutes of June 23rd meeting were read. Motion was made by
Mr. Hanson, seconded by Mr. Durham, that minutes be approved.
Motion was unanimously carried.
Financial report for the month of June was read by the clerk
and approved.
A building permit for a six -room house on Roswell Street was
issued to L. J. Austin.
Permission was granted for Bobby Taylor to live in a trailer on
the rear of his lot on Lee Street with the following conditions:
TI) Provided the neighboring property owners have no objections;
(2) Provided that it is used by him for residence purposes only;
it is never to be rented to anyone else.
Motion waa made by Mr. Quarles, seconded by Mr. Jackson, that
no•:,street:.c,ars be used for residence purposes within the city
limits of Smyrna. Motion was unanimously carried.
Motion was made by Mr. Quarles, seconded by Mr. McCollum, that
the City offer the Lions Club a pump (selected by the city) for
use for their proposed swimming pool, so long as it is used for
that purpose only. Motion was unanimously carried.
Motion was made by Mr. Durham, seconded by Mr. Hanson, that new
fire ladders be bought with the safety of the employees in mind
as well as for the protection of the public from fire. Motion
was unanimously carried.
Outstanding bills against the General Fund, Waterworks & Sewerage
Revenue Fund and Construction Fund were approved for payment.
Motion was made by Mr. Durham, seconded by Mr. Hanson that the
night policeman be paid $160.00 per month, with two days off
each month- also that Mr. Sextonts salary as day policemen in the
amount of 6173.04 be paid in one check. Motion was unanimously
carried.
Petitions requesting passing of Ordinances for paving of streets
were introduced and are attached at the close of these minutes
and made a part hereof; they are more particularly described as
follows:
Petition No. 1: Presented by a Committee from Hill Street and
signed by twelve (12) property owners, this
being a majority of the property owners on said
street.
Petition No. 2: Presented by A committee from Hughes Street and
signed by sixteen (16) Property owners, this
being a majority of the property owners on said
street.
