01-12-1948 Regular Meetingt" M January 12, 1948 A meeting of the Mayor and Council Was held at the City Hall on January 12, 1948. The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Lorena P. Pruitt, Mayor, with all Councilmen present: M. L. Collins, H. D. Dl"ham, Henry Konigsmark, Jr., H., P. McCollum. and P. P. Shaw_ E. R. Cobb, Fire Chief, made a report and asked for financial aid for the volunteer members of the Fire Department. Mr. Cobb was commended for the .good work of the Fire Department and advised that he could not be given any definite promise of financial aid until such time as a budget could be prepared, but that his request would be given every consideration. Motion was made by Mr. McCollum, seconded by Mr. Shaw, that authority be given Mr. Cobb, as Fire Chief, to clean off any vacant lot or other. fire hazard after first giving reasonable notice to the property owner. Motion was unanimously carried. Tax Arbitrators, W. H. Blackstone, J. R. Brewer and P. W. Smith, Sr., having filed their report of arbitration of tax valuations with the Clerk on January 18, 1948, motion was made by Mr. Shaw, seconded by Dr. Collins, that notices be mailed to property owners, showing February 12 as the date after which there will be a fi fa and interest charge.. Motion was unanimously carried. Letters of application for the position of Clerk were read. Following a discussion, Mr. James L. Pierce,,Sr., was called in 'for a personal interview. After Mr. Pierce retired, motion was made by Mr. McCollum, seconded by Dr. Collins, that James L. Pierce, Sr. be elected City Clerk, effective February 2nd. Motion was unanimously carried. Clerk reported request from W. B. Graveley that his 1947 tax be changed to iclude his lot only, as he was not living in his newly built house January 1, 1947. It was agreed that the amount of Mr. Graveley's tax be changed in this manner provided he would sign a sworn statement to the effect that his house was not completed January 1, 1947.
