07-16-1991 Special Called MeetingJuly 16, 1991
A special called meeting of Mayor and Council was held July 16, 1991 at
Smyrna City Hall. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 o'clock p.m. by
presiding officer Mayor A. Max Bacon. All council members were present except
for Jim Hawkins who was out of town, and Bob Davis. Also present was City
Clerk Melinda Dameron and City Attorney Charles E. Camp.
Mayor Bacon stated the purpose of this meeting was to make an appointment for
a council member to fill the unexpired term of John Steely, who resigned July
11, 1991. Section 8 of the City Charter states that in the event a council
members office becomes vacant within 6 months of the next regular election,
an appointment from the ward may be made by the Mayor and Council.
Upon the recommendation of Mayor Bacon, Jack Shinall made a motion that
Charles Pete Wood be appointed from Ward 7 to fill the unexpired term of John
Steely. Wade Lnenicka seconded the motion which carried 4-0.
State Court Judge Ken Nix administered the oath of office to Mr. Wood.
Mr. Wood expressed his appreciation to family and friends and stated he
welcomed the opportunity to serve Ward 7 and the City as a whole. Also, he
appreciated the Mayor and Council for their confidence in him by electing him
to this important position. Mr. Wood said he took the responsibility
seriously and looked forward to working with them.
Mayor Bacon stated that Mr. Wood would assume the same committee assignments
that Mr. Steely had, by serving as Chairman of the Police Committee and being
a member of the Community Development and Parks Committees.
With no further business, meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
