04-22-2002 Regular MeetingDowntown Development Authority
April 22, 2002
The Downtown Development Authority met April 22, 2002 in the second floor
conference at Smyrna City Hall. Chairman Max Bacon called the meeting to order at 6:00
p.m.
Attendees:
Hubert Black C. J. Fouts
Jim Pitts Larry Freeman
Eric Cash Doug Stoner
Melinda Dameron
Jack Cramer, Chairman, Veterans Memorial Committee
Wade Lnenicka, Member, Veterans Memorial Committee
DDA members reviewed two renderings of the memorial now under construction. Mayor
Bacon said that due to a shortfall in funding, the original plans were revised by
eliminating the plaza portion of the memorial. As a result, the project cost has been
reduced from $1.7million to $764,000. More recently there seems to be some
misunderstanding about the materials that are being used; i.e., brick instead of granite and
marble and elimination of the etched globe in the niche, all as shown on the renderings.
There is also some concern that pledges from Lockheed and Wellstar have not been
received.
Several members of the DDA expressed concern with the height of the stairs and flag
platform and especially with regard to liability in the event someone falls and is injured.
Mayor Bacon said he would schedule a joint meeting as soon as possible with the DDA,
Veterans Memorial Association members and architects to answer some of these
questions and to ensure that the memorial is being built in accordance with the rendering
approved by the DDA.
With no further business, meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
